The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have classified prescription drug abuse as an epidemic. Misuse of prescription drugs is rampant across the country and Camden County is no exception. In many cases, medications are accessed through everyday means. There have been an increasing number of reports of medication theft during Open Houses.
In response, our Drug Free Community Coalition created ‘Rx Secure Homes Campaign’ to inform realtors of this potential occurrence. Real estate agents can greatly reduce the risk of having clients victimized by encouraging home owners to take the following steps:
- Remove prescription bottles from plain sight or easily accessed cabinets and drawers.
- Secure current prescription medications, preferably in a lock box or bag.
- Dispose of unwanted or expired medications either by participating in your local DEA Prescription Drug Take Back event, going to a Permanent Drop Box in your area, or by utilizing a safe disposal method such as a Deterra Bag.
